The mountains of the Pacific Northwest are clad in dense forests across much of the range. It is not until one ventures into the higher elevation peaks that one can find the upper limits of the forests and reach the rock, snow and ice of the true alpine landscape. At this final point of transition, larches, silver fir and a small selection of other hearty trees cling to life at the edge of the alpine. Often standing alone or in small groves, these trees serve as a beautiful link between the verdant valleys below and the sterile summits above.
