As I became enthralled with photographing the apocalyptic nuclear weapons of the Cold War, I was inevitably drawn back to the Manhattan Project. I began to wonder how many of those facilities still existed, what they looked like, and, especially, what they might look like in my photographs. Arrangements were made to photograph, under the watchful eyes of multiple escorts, the remaining buildings and equipment at Oak Ridge and Hanford. Since my photoshoot, most of my subjects have been demolished and their sites remediated against the dangerous radiation held within their walls.
