An Australian Boobook Owl takes cover in the shade during a hot ‘Kudjewk’ day (grass season after the summer monsoon floods) day in Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory, Australia. While typically nocturnal, the ‘Kudjewk’ season means that the habitat is flourishing with new life after the monsoon rain. This means also that hunting can take place in the afternoon. The turned eye suggests surviving impact trauma – an unfortunate incident all too common for Australian birds on outback roads. Undeterred, she overcomes her injuries continues to hunt utilising daylight to her advantage.
