One of the fundamental phases of the Voodoo religion is contact with the spirits of the deceased and ancestors: the dead continue to live through their own spirit which returns to earth to grant requests for help from family members and their village. Veneration passes through moments of trance and altered states of consciousness. In the dances, the spirit of the dead temporarily takes possession of the initiate: the reaction is that of a whirling and incessant dance, fueled by pressing and obsessive songs and musical rhythms.
