After my father’s passing, I planned a journey to his birthplace, seeking to connect with the world he came from—a world shaped by haunting memories and silence. All I had was the name of a village in Ukraine: Banila. Weeks before leaving, I found a box of old documents. Among them was a medical report, written 20 years earlier, containing an interview with my father. This report, detailing his life and deportation during WWII, forms the text of this book. The photographs accompany the text, tracing his deportation route through the landscapes of Transnistria. Attached a few selected spreads.
