The Miao ethnic minority celebrate a New Year separate and distinct from the Chinese New Year. Activities are replete with singing, dancing, music playing and feasting. Pictured is part of an all female New Year banquet and the Miao ladies are playing “High Mountain Flowing Water” (Gao Shan Liu Shui), where wine bowls are stacked one on top of the other to pour rice wine from a high place down to the guest. The ladies will sing a toasting song and continue to pour the rice wine until the song ends.
