"Balance" is a challenge against gravity. The pose the model assumes in this chair, found inside an abandoned royal palace, represents the two focal aspects of the woman: nakedness and thus the flesh that leads to earthly thinking, and suspension, that is, the spirituality that conversely saves man. The precarious balance between these two aspects seemingly opposites seems possible with the help of the rays filtering through the stained-glass window broken in the background, making the woman, though carnal, suspended like an angel.
