In July 2024 a brutal knife attack at a Taylor Swift themed dance workshop in the seaside town of Southport resulted in the death of three young girls and serious injuries to eight other children and two adults. In the following days misinformation was spread on social media about the name, religion and immigration status of the killer which mobilised the far-right, and riots targeting mosques, immigration centres and asylum hotels spread throughout the country. Meanwhile, communites came together to grieve, support the victims' families and clear up the devastation left by the rioters.
