Communism ended, but life did not get easier. Many elderly people still live in rural villages throughout Romania and Bulgaria, isolated from family and friends. What seemed like a better way of life did not happen. Searching for a better future, those who were able left these countries for lands with promise. The elderly have remained alone on old collective farms. Their pensions are small, so they spend their days foraging for firewood and food that can be preserved for the harsh winters. Life is hard, but together, they survive. No one knows what the future will bring.
