As the Taliban advanced through Afghanistan this summer, over 1,000 fleeing Afghans were crossing into Turkey – the gateway to Europe – each day. The journey can take as long as three months through harsh terrain, much of it traversed on foot. Some die along the way, others are robbed or stopped by border guards, but a few make it into Turkey. Their struggle does not end there, however – the country is increasingly hostile towards migrants and new arrivals, many of whom remain undocumented, live a life in the shadows. Most dream of moving on, but Europe has made it clear it doesn't want them.
