The bull race is an important folklore event in the Jembrana village in western Bali. From June to November every year, there is a competition almost every two weeks. All jockeys whip the bulls with nail-filled whips. The normally sluggish buffalo can run at astonishing speeds of up to 60 kilometres an hour. Each buffalo is decorated in Balinese traditional splendour and colourful decorations from hooves to horns adding a rich cultural flavour to the game.
