Protests against the Peruvian government grew to levels not seen in decades when President Pedro Castillo was impeached and arrested on December 7, 2022, following his attempted dissolution of Congress. Anger over Castillo’s impeachment and arrest grew quickly amongst the indigenous population. The people felt betrayed and that their voice had been stolen. It sparked protests and ground the nation to a halt. The government responded with what many in the international community claim was excessive force. In the weeks that followed, approximately 70 demonstrators were killed by police.
