The island of Aogashima is 400km south of Tokyo. Approximately 150 residents live there, perched on the rim of a dormant volcano. The fishing waters are highly fertile, and volcanic soil makes for nutrient rich vegetables. Local food is cooked with the geothermal energy. I visited the island 6 times, initially seeking landscapes of sheer isolation, but as I got to know the incredibly resilient locals the project was expanded to include portraiture and a documentary (trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5OzaKq9LEg )
